About Nicole Van Ness, PsyD
I have been doing Couples and Family Therapy since 2008. I have unrelenting optimism for my clients' growth, and a deep respect for the stories they share. I am here to help, not to judge. My clients know that I am in their corner - What this means is that I fully support and cheer you on, while also calling you out on your "stuff" that may be getting in the way of your success.
My practice is unique blend of approaches, in which I help you discover what is and isn't working, unleash your inner strengths, and give you practical and proven tools to help you succeed. The exploration in therapy can be fun, difficult, intense, and a deeply rewarding experience.
I utilize a combination of mindfulness, neuroscience, relationship research, family systems theories, mood management, and life experiences to work with your relationship history, emotional patterns, and current difficulties. The approach or model I rely on most is the Developmental Model of Couples Therapy. I am particularly drawn to the work of Esther Perel and have been a long time follower of her work and training. In therapy, we will work with your attitude, emotion, motivation, desires, experience, personal values, and behavior, for a uniquely comprehensive approach to help you to be the best "you" possible, and to get the kind of relationship and sex life you have been waiting for.
Specifically with couples, the work we do in therapy will call your awareness to who each person is, what helps and hurts connection, the way you each show up (for better or worse) and help you decide what to keep, what to change, and how.
Identities: Like most people, I'm a mix of several identities: cisgender female, heterosexual, married, mother, neurodivergent, animal lover, sapiosexual, food and cooking enthusiast, lifelong learner, trauma survivor, ambivert, progressive.
I moved to Texas from San Diego, CA in 2015, and I maintain licensure in both states. I have worked with individuals, couples, children, teens, groups, and families from many backgrounds and lifestyles. I currently teach as an adjunct faculty at Southern Methodist University, and I supervise several associate level therapists. My education includes a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, a professional certification in Business, a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT), and a Doctor of Psychology (Psy. D.) in MFT. My research is on sexuality and eroticism, intimacy, religion and spirituality in therapy, pornography, trauma, and other areas of sexuality. My passion is helping couples recover (or discover!) fulfilling sexual connection in their dull, disconnected, or conflicted relationships.

"All emotions are healthy, because emotions are what unite the mind and the body. Anger, fear, and sadness, the so-called negative emotions, are as healthy as peace, courage, and joy...
All honest emotions are positive emotions."
